Leadership & Staff

Mr. Doug Bryant has a long tenure of service to the state of South Carolina.  A native of Anderson, S.C., Mr. Bryant served as Commissioner of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) from 1993-2001.  During his tenure at DHEC, Mr. Bryant held numerous positions including Assistant Administrator of the State Park Hospital, Director of the Upper Savannah Health District and Assistant to the Commissioner.  In 2004, he formed The Bryant Company, a health and environmental consulting firm.  He holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in public health from the University of South Carolina.  Mr. Bryant is the recipient of many honors including The Order of the Palmetto (the highest honor granted by the state of South Carolina), the Distinguished Alumni Award from the USC Arnold School of Public Health, the Meritorious Service Award from the Southern Health Association, the James A. Hayne Award for Meritorious Achievement from the South Carolina Public Health Association, the Child Advocate Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the President’s Award from the South Carolina Medical Association, and the Community Service Award from the South Carolina Hospital Association.  With this impressive record of public health experience and excellence, Mr. Bryant brings considerable capacity to the South Carolina Public Health Institute.  He is working with SCPHI in the role of key advisor and legislative liaison.
