January 2010
Focus: Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership

SCPHI is proud to announce the affiliation of the Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership (IHPL) into its organization.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV, and that 21% of these persons do not know they are infected.  In addition, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS is increasing, as effective new drug therapies keep HIV-infected persons healthy longer and dramatically reduce the AIDS death rate.  Preventing the spread of HIV across the United States is an issue of vital importance.

SCPHI Executive Director Dr. Donna L. Richter has been involved in HIV prevention research and practice since the 1980s. She has served as principal investigator of many federally-funded research and training initiatives in this field.  Dr. Richter is principal investigator of the CDC-funded Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership (IHPL), a project which has been supported by the CDC consistently for 11 years. IHPL operates under a cooperative agreement with the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH)

The Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership is a comprehensive, capacity building educational program designed specifically for HIV-prevention program managers who work in community-based organizations (CBOs). The Institute capacity building is focused on a dual-track curriculum that integrates principles of public health prevention and strategic planning and management. Over the past decade, IHPL has graduated over 300 HIV prevention program managers from across the United States and its territories.  IHPL has resulted in excellent relationships with community-based HIV care and prevention providers across the nation, including within South Carolina.
