Our History
The South Carolina Public Health Institute has grown out of the collaborative strength of the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. That essential partnership created a solid foundation upon which SCPHI could be built. It is through the specific leadership of members of the South Carolina Public Health Consortium that the vision for a statewide public health institute emerged. That vision lead to funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation which supported the strategic planning for an institute through their Fostering Emerging Institutes Program. Participation in that program provided the needed technical assistance and developmental guidance to move SCPHI toward a successful future. SCPHI received further momentum as a result of an investment by The Duke Endowment, which presently supports both infrastructure and programmatic aspects of the Institute. SCPHI also benefits from support provided by the University of South Carolina’s Office of Research.
