Leadership & Staff

Ms. Julie Smithwick-Leone is a bilingual social worker and Certified Childbirth Educator with many years of experience working in Latin America and with Latino immigrants in the Southeastern United States. Her experiences include working as a program developer for a community-based English as a Second Language (ESL) program in Georgia, a Peace Corps Volunteer for at-risk families in Ecuador, a middle school ESL teacher in North Carolina, and an interpreter and translator in South Carolina. Her areas of expertise include perinatal health, immigrant women’s health issues, health care access, culturally appropriate educational interventions and community outreach techniques. In 2005, Ms. Smithwick-Leone conducted an assessment on the perinatal health of Latino immigrants in the Midlands region of South Carolina. This assessment led to the development of the Latino Perinatal Outreach Program. Currently, that program is expanding statewide through the South Carolina Public Health Institute as the Perinatal Awareness for Successful Outcomes (PASOs) Program.
